How Do Demolition Contractors Stay Safe During Projects?

January 12, 2024

As you likely know, demolition is essentially construction in reverse, just with more safety hazards. During the demo process, not only are those nearby at risk, but the demolition contractors themselves are as well. Did you know that, according to the EPA, 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris is created every year? Let's look at some of the steps contractors can take to make demo projects safer.

Using an Engineered Plan

At first glance, demolition services may look like a team of people simply tearing something down, but there's a lot more that goes into a safe and successful demolition project. The best demo projects are highly engineered events. Effective plans will take into account the structure and materials being demolished to ensure that everything is handled safely. Just like you need a blueprint to construct a building properly, you need a plan to take the structure apart as well.

Conducting a Safety Analysis

Once the plan is complete, a safety analysis will need to be conducted as well. A safety analysis will take note of every safety hazard that might be encountered. This can even include safety issues arising from the materials that will be handled. For instance, if the structure has asbestos in it, this material will need to be removed from the premises under specific guidelines. To create an effective safety analysis each activity or task should be isolated, all associated hazards or risks should be recognized, and solutions should be identified on how to control or mitigate the risk.

Using Proper Tools

The tools that are used during the demo project are also a big part of the overall safety. All heavy equipment should be in good working order and should be up to code. Hand tools that are used for smaller-scale work should also be standard and up to safety codes. In addition to the tools and equipment being safe, workers themselves should be properly trained to do the demolition tasks that they are being assigned.
